Cities and Statecraft in the Renaissance looks at the rise of trade, commerce, guilds, and the merchant and ruling classes in northern Europe. This influenced the growth of towns, cities, states, and regions, who competed with one another for power, artistic talent, and creativity. At the same time, people rich and poor were struggling to establish new forms of society and government.

A Bit Behind the Book
Researching this book was truly fascinating. I love looking into history to see what people and places were like. The plague, the time it took to travel and build things...so different from today and yet so much of today depends on what happened yesterday. Many years ago when I finished university I travelled in Europe. One of my favourite cities was Florence (Firenze), Italy. Walking those streets, seeing the duomo, being in the city once run by the famous Medici family. I wish I'd known then that I'd go on to write about that city, considered to be the birthplace of the Renaissance.
